Get Over Here! New Mortal Kombat Game Announced

Just a few days after the mysterious MK short film hits the web we get a new MK game announcement... and its GREAT.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (new MK IP owners) announced a new Mortal Kombat game earlier today, simply called Mortal Kombat. Similar to Street Fighter IV the game will feature an all new 3D graphics engine and what there calling a ''reinvention'' of MK's classic 2D fighting mechanic. Ed Boon returns to lead his newly re-named NetherRealm Studios (formally known as the MK Team) to bring you the ''most gruesome fatalities ever''.

"We are bringing the Mortal Kombat franchise back to gamers with the talented NetherRealm Studios team creating the game fans long to play," said Martin Tremblay, President, WBIE. Ed Boon was quoted saying, "This game really is a response to what players have been demanding.'' "We can't wait for players to get their hands on Mortal Kombat"

The game will include a 4 player tag-team mode where players battle in teams of two against each other, similar to the mode found in Mortal Kombat Trilogy. You and a friend will also be able to play the games new cooperative arcade mode or take the fight online against other teams of two.

Returning characters include Kung Lao, Johnny Cage, Shao Kahn, Sub Zero, Mileena, Sextor, Nightwolf, Rayden, and Retile. We get to see some classic stages making there return as well like The living forest, Pit II, and The dead pool.

Also note the game appears to have some sort of Marvel vs Capcom style assists. In the screen shots above we see Kung Lao throwing his hat towards Nightwolf and Johnny Cage firing his green projectile at Sub Zero while there team mates are still on screen. This adds a whole new level of depth not seen before in any past MK game, and makes for some very interesting match ups.

The game is slated for launch on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 some time in 2011. We leave you now with the new trailer below. Enjoy
